Why Health & Safety Come First – Our Shift to TPO-Free Gel

The beauty industry is evolving rapidly, and one of the most important changes is the European Union’s decision to ban TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) in all nail products from 1 September 2025 because it is classified as a CMR substance (toxic to reproduction) (European Commission, 2024a). Although this regulation has not yet been adopted in the UK, it is widely expected that UK authorities will align with this measure in the near future.
What TPO-Free Means for You
TPO is a photoinitiator that helps gel products cure under UV/LED lamps. While it has been considered safe at typical use levels, studies reviewed by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) highlighted its potential reproductive toxicity in high-exposure conditions, leading to its removal from cosmetics under the EU’s hazard-based approach (SCCS, 2023; European Commission, 2024b).
At Nails and the City, we believe that your health should always come first. This is why we are gradually switching to TPO-free gel systems, so that by the time the UK introduces similar legislation, we will already be compliant.
Our HEMA-Free Commitment
In addition to moving away from TPO, we already use HEMA-free gel products, reducing the risk of allergic contact dermatitis. The EU has restricted HEMA and Di-HEMA TMHDC for professional use only, with mandatory warning labels, after research linked them to rising cases of nail allergies and dermatitis (Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/1682). The British Association of Dermatologists has warned that improper curing or skin contact with (meth)acrylates can cause long-term allergies (BAD, 2023).
Our Safety Measures
Careful product selection – We work only with trusted suppliers that offer fully compliant, high-quality, tested gel systems.
Strict hygiene protocols – All tools are disinfected between clients, and disposable items are used where possible.
Proper curing and application techniques – Our nail technicians are trained to avoid skin contact and ensure gels are fully cured.
Continuous education – We stay updated with new regulations and scientific findings to protect our clients and staff.
Our Promise to You
Although this change is not yet mandatory in the UK, we are proactively adopting TPO-free gels and continuing our use of HEMA-free systems to prioritise your long-term health.
